Money and Relationships: Elaine King, CFP®, on Couples’ Finances and Women’s Financial Independence

Miami, February 2026 — Around Valentine’s Day, Elaine King, CFP®, founder of Family and Money Matters™, brought a single argument to media across the United States and Latin America: lasting relationships are also built on honest conversations about money, and economic autonomy strengthens,  rather than weakens,  those bonds.

Key Idea. Financial independence doesn’t weaken love: it allows decisions made from confidence rather than dependence.

Why It Matters

Money remains one of the leading sources of conflict in relationships. For women navigating a divorce, a new relationship, or the reorganization of their wealth, financial clarity is the difference between deciding from freedom and deciding from dependence.

Elaine King’s Perspective
  • The overdue conversation. On Ante Usted, King noted that money is the leading cause of conflict among couples and that, in her experience, roughly 36% do not share common financial goals.
  • A concrete method. She proposed discussing money regularly, reviewing goals at least twice a year, and distinguishing debt that builds wealth (a home, a business) from debt that erodes freedom (consumption, depreciating assets).
  • Independence that strengthens. In El Popular and OJO she developed women’s financial independence as the basis for more balanced relationships: economic autonomy allows decisions from confidence rather than fear.
  • Less noise, better decisions. In Investopedia she examined how the constant consumption of news fuels anxiety and impulsive reactions, and why a long-term plan protects retirement decisions.
