# Nobel Prize in Economics 2026: What Hall and Woodford Teach Families About Wealth

[Blog (EN)](https://www.elaineking.com/blog/tag/blog-en)

*Two economists just won the Nobel for showing that expectations move economies. I see the same thing every week at the tables of families preparing for an inheritance, a business sale or the next generation.*

*By Elaine King, CFP®, TEP, CDFA™*

On Monday morning I read the news twice. Robert Hall of Stanford and Michael Woodford of Columbia won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics “for microeconomic foundations of macroeconomic stabilisation.”

I know. That sentence does not sound like it belongs at a family table. Stay with me, because I think it does.

For a long time, much of economics looked at the economy from above: total spending, total jobs, total prices. Hall and Woodford started from the ground. They asked how a household decides to spend and how a business decides what to charge, and they showed how millions of those small choices add up to inflation, unemployment and growth.

Their central insight is that people do not decide based only on what they have today. They decide based on what they expect tomorrow. Families are no different. In the families I work with — families with a business, real estate, an inheritance on the way — expectations are where wealth is quietly protected or quietly lost. Most families just never say theirs out loud.

### **We Spend What We Expect, Not What We Have**

Hall studied how households decide whether and how much to spend, and found that those choices depend heavily on what people expect their future income to be. A raise you believe is permanent can change how you live. A bonus you believe is one-time usually doesn’t.

I see the same pattern with inheritance. It is one of the quietest risks in family wealth.

Picture a family I’ll call the Riveras — a composite of situations I see often. Two parents, a business and real estate built over forty years, three adult children, and a plan nobody had ever explained. So each child built an expectation of their own. The oldest assumed the business would come to her. The middle son assumed he would be bought out generously. The youngest assumed there would be “enough,” and without anyone noticing, she started living as if the money were already there: a bigger mortgage, a car that matched the expectation more than the salary.

None of them were irresponsible. They were doing exactly what Hall describes, spending against a future they believed in. Three children believed in three different futures, and their parents believed in a fourth. That is why my work with a family starts with expectations, not with the portfolio.

***In short: Your children are already making decisions based on what they think is coming. The real question is whether what they think is true.***

### **Say It Before It Happens**

Woodford showed that businesses set prices based partly on where they think interest rates are headed. That gave central banks a powerful tool. When a central bank explains clearly what it plans to do, and people believe it, behavior can begin to shift before any rate moves. Economists call this forward guidance.

I practice my own version every day. In the morning, I say out loud where I am going. In the afternoon, I open Excel and do my budget, line by line. No affirmations there. Just numbers. A vision without a budget stays a wish, and a budget without a vision feels like punishment. It is my yin and my yang.

Families need both halves too. In many families I meet, the vision lives in the founder’s head and the plan lives in documents nobody has read. Then something happens, and everyone discovers the plan at the same moment — often in an attorney’s office, often in grief.

Here is what the other way can look like, again in a composite. A founder who spent forty years building a distribution company asked his two children, his attorney, his CPA and me to sit at one table. He didn’t share numbers. He shared principles: who would run the company and why, and what “fair” meant to him — and why it was not the same as “equal.” Then the attorney asked whether the buy-sell agreement matched what he had just said. It didn’t. I asked the CPA what each child might owe in taxes under each version. We worked through both while there was still time to change them.

Nothing dramatic happened after that meeting. That was the point. The crisis that never arrives doesn’t make the news.

***In short: Credibility comes from saying it early, saying it clearly, and backing it with a plan, a budget and the right professionals at the same table.***

### **Give Your Money a Purpose Before the Windfall**

Hall and Woodford’s work helps governments and central banks respond to shocks like energy crises and inflation far more effectively. Much of that comes from deciding the response in calm times, so nobody has to improvise in a panic.

Not every shock is bad news. It can be a large bonus, an inheritance, the sale of a property or the sale of the company itself. Each one arrives with a feeling, and the feeling tends to decide faster than the plan.

This is why I believe a family needs an investment policy statement before it needs the money. It is a simple written agreement about what the money is for, how much risk the family can live with, how long it can stay invested, how much stays liquid and who decides. For a family with significant assets, it is also how the family holds its advisor accountable — including me.

The purpose has to be there before the windfall. Money without purpose is wasted, and money that arrives without one rarely stays long enough to find it.

***In short: Write the rules while you are calm, so that when the money arrives it already knows where to go.***

### **Where the KING Method Meets the Nobel**

A lot of good work is being done. Economists study how families decide. Attorneys draft better documents. Advisors build better portfolios. It is still not enough, because half of the effort belongs to the family itself.

Families need to learn together, save together and spend together. That is the real case for family governance: a simple structure for making decisions together toward a goal. It can start small — where to go to dinner, then a trip, then the logo for the family business — and soon, the purchase of an asset that can appreciate over time. Every small decision made together is practice for the big ones.

The KING Method™ is how I organize that work:

- **K — Knowledge.** Start from the ground, the way Hall and Woodford did. Understand how each family member actually decides, not only what the balance sheet says.
- **I — Insight.** Bring the expectations into the open. What does each person believe is coming, and when?
- **N — Navigate.** Give the family its own forward guidance, with the attorney, CPA, trustee and planner in the same conversation.
- **G — Growth.** Stability is not the destination. It is what allows a family to grow, financially and as people, across generations.

### **Four Things You Can Do This Month**

- **Ask each family member what they expect.** Not what they want. What they believe is coming.
- **Pair your vision with a budget.** Write down where your family is going, then open the spreadsheet and check that the numbers agree.
- **Write an investment policy before the next windfall.** A bonus, an inheritance or a sale is easier to handle when the purpose was decided first.
- **Practice deciding together.** Start with dinner or a trip. Governance is a habit long before it is a document.

In many Latin families, we were raised to believe that not talking about money protects the peace. This year’s Nobel suggests something different.

**Silence is also forward guidance. It just points your family somewhere you never chose.**

*Tonight at dinner, ask: what does each of us believe is coming, and have we ever said it out loud?*

### **Work With Me**

I work with a limited number of families at a time — families with a business, an inheritance or a sale ahead who want their wealth managed to a written plan and their next generation prepared to receive it. I coordinate with your attorney, CPA and trustee so the plan, the documents and the portfolio say the same thing.

### **Frequently Asked Questions**

**Who won the 2026 Nobel Prize in Economics, and why?**

Robert E. Hall of Stanford University and Michael Woodford of Columbia University won for showing how the decisions of individual households and businesses, especially their expectations about the future, add up to inflation, unemployment and growth, and how policy can help stabilize the economy.

**What is forward guidance in plain English?**

It is when a central bank explains in advance what it plans to do. If people believe it, they may start adjusting their spending, borrowing and pricing before any rate changes. In a family, forward guidance is explaining the plan before it is needed.

**How do expectations affect a family’s finances?**

People tend to spend according to what they think is coming. An heir who expects an inheritance may borrow or spend as if the money were already there. Saying expectations out loud can help a family avoid decisions built on assumptions.

**What is an investment policy statement, and does a family need one?**

It is a written agreement about what the money is for, the risk the family can accept, the time horizon, liquidity needs and who makes decisions. Many families find it most useful before a windfall, when emotions are calm.

**When should a family bring in a family wealth advisor?**

Ideally before a transition, not during it: before an inheritance is received, before a business is sold or passed to the next generation, or before a divorce is finalized. That is when there is still time to align the plan, the legal documents, the taxes and the portfolio.

**What is family governance?**

It is the way a family makes decisions together toward shared goals. It can begin with small choices, like dinner or a trip, and grow into agreements about a family business, shared investments and wealth transfer.

**What is the KING Method?**

It is Elaine King’s framework for family wealth conversations: Knowledge, Insight, Navigate and Growth.
